Blackboard/Library Reserves
Readings for Your Students
What to do if you find a reading during the semester that you want to give to your students:
You have several options. You can contact the Reserves Librarian and she may be able to create a durable link to the reading throught Blackboard. If the article is not available in this format, you may make one copy per student to pass out in class for that one semester only. You may also place one copy of the article on reserve at the Library Information Desk. If you want to continue to use an article for future semesters that is not available through E-Reserve, it should be added to your course pack.
Anthologies
Articles can be distributed once to students free of charge. After that any anthology of readings should be distributed as a course pack, where copyright permissions are obtained.
Electronic Reserves for Blackboard Course Sites
Full text articles from EBSCOhost, ProQuest, InfoTrac Web, Emerald, JSTOR and books in NetLibrary may be linked in your Blackboard course page. Instructions for students to access information from other library subscription databases can also be posted in your Blackboard course page.
To provide electronic reserve readings for students:
- Send the reading list in list format (not syllabus format) to the Reserves Librarian at lreifler-alessi@babson.edu or to your liaison librarian.
- Your reading list will be reviewed and you will be notified which items can be provided online, and which items must be obtained through the bookstore as part of a coursepack (such as Harvard Business Review cases and most book chapters)
- Once your course site is created within Blackboard, the reserves librarian and liaison librarian are added as teaching assistants (You or the ITSD Support Center can do this).
- The reserves librarian (or liaison) will create links within your Blackboard site. Please check our Blackboard tab in the Reserves Libguide or contact the Reserves Librarian (x6450 or lreifler-alessi@babson.edu) or your liaison librarian for more information about this service. Librarians can also assist with copyright questions.
To get copyright permission to post something on Blackboard or on your own website: If there is something you wish to post on your Blackboard page contact the Reserves Coordinator, lreifler-alessi@babson.edu, or your library liaison and we will take care of getting copyright permission for the item, provided that the copyright holder is willing to grant permission. Fees are paid for by the library.
To post readings on your own website, you are responsible for copyright permission for your own website where the library does not have access; however, we can create a Readings only Blackboard page that can be linked directly to your website. In this instance we take care of copyright permissions.
Can you post .pdf files of articles from websites and/or Library databases onto your Blackboard or personal website?
No. Downloading .pdf files off of databases and posting them onto Blackboard, or your personal website is a form of copyright and contract violation. Database providers pay royalties to publishers according to the number of times an article is viewed. Use of documents loaded onto sites and not linked cannot be counted. However, you may post a link to PDfs already existing on the web.
Can you add a case to your Blackboard site or place one on reserve?
No. Since copyright permissions need to be purchased for each individual who will be using the case, they are not available online and the library does not own any. Cases can be purchased through the bookstore or you can find information on the library website on how to purchase them yourself. For Babson cases, you can also contact Randee Lucia, Manager, Case Publishing, x6103, rlucia@babson.edu.
How do your students retrieve copies of Harvard Business School or Babson cases? Please direct students to the Bookstore, which has an arrangement with HBS and Babson to photocopy and distribute cases. For Babson cases, the student may also want to contact Randee Lucia, Manager, Case Publishing, x6103, rlucia@babson.edu.
